The
Nagsman - Reader Contributions (Click here to go back to The Nagsman) From: Hilary Samuels - Date: 3 April 2010 If you have a horse cast in its stable and it appears that he has given up hope of getting up, and all else has failed, try this remedy. Take a cup of cold water, and, if safe to approach the horse, pour the water in its ear and get out of the stable faster than Red Rum! This system has worked several times on a lanky tall thoroughbred gelding that we owned and who was persistantly casting himself, usually after a visit from the farrier, dentist or vet, although he was a remarkably calm and unfussed horse and never obviously objected to his 'tormentors'. I like your Nagsman page, such a good idea. From: Kimberley Michel - Date: 29 December 2001 I was reading through your article and found one of the techniques I usewith young horses: turning my back and waiting for them to approach me. This technique works just about 100% every time and if the young horse is then rewarded it learns to approach quickly once it sees you. Also another technique or way of relating to horses: many people will walk past their horse and give it a friendly slap on the rump or neck but to really communicate friendship to a horse it is much better to rub the horse's neck, etc or gently run your hand over him and breathe softly on his nose and the rest of him, talking to him in whispers and spending a little time each day relating to him in this gentle way. This is the way a mare communicates love to her foal and the way two horses communicate friendship. I have tried this technique and it is now a part of my daily life. It definitely works and once the horse trusts you and feels he can relate to you he will feel confident with you as his handler and in some cases my horses have even relied upon the friendship and it has helped them to be extra confident in the show ring! We will be publishing more of the Nagsman's secrets soon, in the meantime send us yours. If you have tried The Nagmans remedies with success email us and let us know!
